Why Did God Choose Mary to Be the Mother of Jesus?
The question of why God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus invites reflection on one of the most beautiful moments in salvation history. Mary does not appear suddenly in the New Testament. Her role is connected to God’s plan from the beginning. When God promised a Redeemer in Genesis 3:15, He spoke not only of the Messiah but also of the woman through whom He would come. From that moment onward, salvation would involve both the promised Savior and the mother who would bear Him.
Mary enters the Gospel narrative in the town of Nazareth. The angel Gabriel greets her with words never spoken to any other person in Scripture: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28). This greeting reveals something essential. Mary is not chosen randomly. She is prepared by God spiritually and personally for a mission that no one else could fulfill. Her heart and life are already oriented toward God in a way that reflects deep humility and faith.
Another reason God chose Mary is because of her freedom to say yes. When Gabriel tells her she will conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary does not argue or resist. Instead, she responds, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). This response is not passive obedience but a free and trusting acceptance. Her willingness allows God’s plan to move from promise to reality. In that moment, the eternal Son of God takes on human nature and enters the world.
Mary also fulfills the prophecies connected to the Messiah. The Messiah had to come from the line of David (2 Samuel 7:12–14; Jeremiah 23:5), and Mary belongs to that lineage. The Virgin Birth foretold by Isaiah—“The virgin shall conceive and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14)—finds its literal fulfillment in her. Through Mary, the Word becomes flesh (John 1:14).
If we think about this carefully, God choosing Mary tells us something important about how God works. He does not choose based on status, fame, or worldly power. Mary was a young woman in a small town, unnoticed by the world, yet known and loved by God. Her life teaches that God accomplishes great things through those who are humble, faithful, and open to His will.
Mary’s role does not end at Bethlehem. She remains present throughout the life, ministry, and mission of Jesus. She stands at the foot of the Cross (John 19:25) and is gathered with the disciples in prayer as the Church begins (Acts 1:14). Her “yes” is not a moment but a lifelong commitment.
So why did God choose Mary? Because she was prepared, willing, and faithful. Through her, the Savior entered the world. Through her, God’s promise became flesh and salvation came to humanity.
