What does the name “Jesus” mean?

Names in the Bible are never random. They often reveal identity, purpose, and mission. This is especially true with the name Jesus. The angel Gabriel did not leave the choice to Mary or Joseph. Instead, he clearly instructed them: “You shall call His name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). The name was chosen by God Himself, which means it carries deep meaning and purpose.

The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua (or Joshua), which means “The Lord saves” or “God is salvation.” This meaning is confirmed in the Gospel of Matthew when the angel tells Joseph, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). The name does not simply describe who He is. It tells us why He came—to save humanity.

The meaning of Jesus’s name is also connected to the long history of God’s promises in the Old Testament. From the moment sin entered the world in Genesis 3:15, God promised a Redeemer. Throughout Israel’s history, God saved His people in different ways: from slavery in Egypt, from enemies, and from exile. However, these acts of rescue pointed toward something greater. The birth of Jesus fulfills the deepest promise of salvation—not only physical rescue, but spiritual restoration and forgiveness.

The name Jesus also shows that salvation is not something humanity achieves by effort or merit. Salvation comes from God. The meaning “God saves” reminds us that human beings cannot save themselves from sin or death. Jesus came to do what no one else could: reconcile humanity with God. His name reveals that salvation is a gift, offered freely through Him.

There is also a personal element in this name. When the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary, he announced not only who her child would be, but what His mission was. Mary carried in her womb the One whose name contains the promise of eternal life. In her acceptance of God’s plan, the meaning of the name Jesus became flesh (John 1:14). Through Mary, the One who saves entered the world.

If we reflect carefully, the name Jesus invites us to trust. When we speak His name, we are not merely identifying a historical figure. We are calling upon the Savior who continues to forgive, heal, guide, and restore. Scripture teaches, “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). His name expresses both His identity and His mission.

So what does the name Jesus mean? It means God saves. It tells us who He is, why He came, and what He continues to offer the world. His name is a declaration of hope, mercy, and the love of God made visible.
